Silver nitrate treatment for canker sores

Question:
My dentist has related that the best treatment for canker sores is silver nitrate. Has anyone tried this and can relay some details?

Answer:
My dad has used silver nitrate sticks on my canker sores in the past when they have gotten really bad. The stick burns out the sore and then it takes just a few days to heal. However while it is being applied it hurts like hell! I haven't gotten any bad ones lately so I have not had to use the silver nitrate in a while. My dentist told me that canker sores will take 10 days to go away and there is nothing that you can do about them. I have used Zilactin, which contains tannic acid, with good results. It forms a film over the sore so that you can eat citric fruits without irritation. I also think that it shortens the duration of the sore.
