Go to any drugstore and get a tube of Anbesol Gel. It is specifically
formulated for any kind of mouth pain, including canker sores.
The active ingredient is benzocaine, a pain reliever similar to the Novocain
your dentist uses, except it is not for injection.
It's effective nearly immediately, although there will be an initial "sting"
until the anesthetic effect kicks in. The effect lasts for several
hours--enough to get through a night's sleep without being awakened by mouth
pain.
