Question:
I have been getting canker sores in my mouth (between lower lip and
gum about 1cm off center) on a regular basis (every 2-3 months) for
awhile. The canker sore always reappears in the same vicinity as all
past sores. Needless to say, they are painful and annoying.
[Yesterday I ate cantaloupe (fruit), and when the fruit juice
contacted the canker sore, I thought that my head was going to rupture
Other citric juices do not have this effect.
I purchased Zilactin (tannic acid and SD alcohol active ingredients)
which is supposed to help. I put the medication on the sore, and
after a few moments of pain, it just makes a white film over the sore.
I am beginning to doubt that Zilactin actually helps the sore heal. It
seems to simply put a barrier over the sore to minimize irritation.
Does anyone know if there is anything that I can do about canker
sores?
Answer:
Herpes Simplex Virus I causes "cold sores" which attack different areas
of the mouth than Canker Sosres or "Aphthous Ulcers". Canker Sores last
14 days if you treat them 2 weeks if you don't treat them. Several things
can be used with some success. Canker is an OTC med that may be helpful.
Negatan is a topical medication prescribed for those who have crops of
the painful things. Oragel will coat the area and that is about it. Some
DDS's are using Laser to treat severe ulcers
