Question:
What causes them? Is there any way to get rid of them faster without
using medication (i.e. a change in diet of some sort)? Any info anyone
can provide on these would be most appreciated!
Answer:
Canker sores are also known as recurrent aphthous ulcers. When they appear
the ulcers are usually on the oral mucosa. The condition lasts for about 7 -
10 days and usually heals without scarring. Most canker sores are recurrent
(hence the name). Some of the causes include: trauma to mucosa, stress,
hypersensitivity to certain foods or products used in the mouth, chemical
burns, GI disorders, idiopathic causes, etc.. Some other disease conditions
mimic canker sores, but are classified under a different category.
They usually heal on their own in 7 - 10 days. Some studies show a possible
benefit from applying tannic acid to the site. An rinse of warm baking soda
and water can help sooth the area and may speed up recovery. A prescription
of topical corticosteroid such as kenalog in orabase is also helpful but
infection must first be ruled out or you'll end up with a raging huge ulcer.
A topical anesthetic such as Ora-Jel or Anbesol can help dull the pain of a
canker sore. I'm not sure of any natural "cures" for canker sores, but since
tea contains tannins, you could try sucking on a tea bag. ;-)
Always remember to contact your dentist or physician if the sore lasts for
more than the usual 7 -10 days it takes for a canker sore to heal.
