Question:
Just got my first cold sore. Not sure which one of the many non-RX
products out there to try. Hopefully there's something topical that will
prevent it if applied early, or at least does a good job of reducing
severity and duration of the sore. What has worked best for you or
someone you know? Have seen Quantum's Super L-lysine, Viractin cold sores
Begone, and herbal remedies with either olive leaf extract or
melissa (lemon balm). If you've tried any of these, feedback would be
appreciated.
Answer:
Do either one of them prevent the eruption if you get it on at the early
stage? If no, do either reduce the severity and duration of the store?
The best topical is the prescription cream Acyclovir, branded as Zovirex I
think. It's used to treat other herpes infections as well, but works
wonders on cold sores ...if you apply it when the first tingle starts,
you'll generally not get a raised blister at all. I read something about
this product being considered for OTC sales, so check with your doctor or
pharmacist on availability.
